Possibly this is the John Hickling Hay Farmer who in 1910 bought "Englefield" a double storey Victorian house at 49 Newcastle St Maitland perhaps on the property owned as early as 18 August 1837 by John Smith also known as John Sidebottom when his grant of 148 acres at Wallis Creek was ratified. The Hicklings lived there until about 1968, when the house fell into disrepair until 1986 when it was bought by Peter Gibbs, who restored the house and had a business conserving Australian colonial furniture and buildings. Over the next 20 years "Englefield" was reconstructed and adapted to modern living. It is now a National Trust property.
